Is That Really a Cuban Cigar?

Did you know that there is a small amount of tobacco imported to the US by Cuba?. Some Cuban tobacco actually gets into the US but the amount is small. There is a limit imposed on the amount that can be imported but it is enough to create confusion in the market. This tobacco is usually rolled into cigars along with other tobaccos so they can be marketed as “Cubans”. In most cases, this is the type of cigar you will be purchasing in a store if they are labeled as Cubans. Otherwise, you are getting illegal goods and may want to look for another cigar shop since that one may have Federal agents swarming it soon!

Canada and other countries are a different story however. You can usually find a good Cuban cigar which is one of the premier cigars in the world (next to a nicely rolled Dominican, in my humble opinion).

Here’s what you need to pay attention to when buying a cigar that is labeled as a “Cuban”:

  • Is the cigar 100% Cuban? Or are they using some Cuban tobacco mixed in with other tobacco?
  • Buying a genuine Cuban cigar in the US is illegal. Sure it’s great to have a nice smoke but is it worth some kind of legal issue?
  • If you are outside of the US purchase a Cuban just like you would any other cigar. Check the wrapper; is it natural, maduro has it been aged?
  • My conclusion is simple. Like all good things in life you need to weigh the pros and cons. Since it is hard to find a real Cuban cigar in the US and there could be issues involved with purchasing them, why not enjoy a different smoke that has no strings attached?
